Any writer will tell you that often times figuring out what to write can be the most difficult part of the process. This is especially true for students, who are usually tasked with coming up with an interesting and original essay topic, even though they have very little experience with writing in general. Luckily, there are a few simple techniques to generating an interesting essay topic that anyone can use.

The first thing to keep in mind is that it is always best to follow your interests when finding a topic for your essay. There is always a temptation to find a topic that other people—especially teachers—will find interesting, and while there’s nothing wrong with taking your audience’s tastes into consideration, it is almost always better to write about something you are interested in. If you like medieval history, the passion and interest you have for the subject will come through and the audience will be much more engaged than if you wrote about, say, macroeconomics.

But the best advice anyone can ever give you on the subject of generating an interesting essay topic is to be specific. One of the most common mistakes people make is choosing a topic that is too broad. As a result, they have way too much research to go through and no clear idea of what they’re going to write about. For example, “cars” would make for a terrible essay topic. There’s too much information about cars and the topic gives you no real way to focus. However, if you wrote about “the development of the electric car”, you have a much clearer idea of what you’re going to write about for your essay.

How do you go from a general topic (“cars”) to a more specific (“the development of the electric car”)? The best way is to use some form of mind-mapping. Mind-mapping is a way of recording the connections your mind makes between ideas or concepts. There are many different ways to use mind-mapping, but they generally all work in the same manner. You start with a single, broad concept:

– Cars

And you start writing down any concepts or ideas that you associate with the concept:

– Cars

            – history of cars

            – how cars work

            – race cars

            – sport cars

Then you repeat this process for the associated sub-concepts:

– Cars

            – history of cars

                        – Henry Ford

                        – invention of the car engine

            – how cars work

                        – internal combustion

            – race cars

                        – NASCAR

            – sport cars

                        – Porsche

                        – Lamborghini

And you simply repeat this process until you find a specific topic that you’re interested in writing about. It’s that easy.

Anyway, that’s it for our look into how you can generate interesting essay topics. Next time we’ll look at something everyone need, loves, and hates: peer review. Until then, stay safe and keep writing.
